Rain on Your Parade
Rain On Your Parade is a refreshing break from traditional video gaming. Unbound Creations has removed the pressures that many games mount against players and designed an experience purely around simple, fun, problem solving. You will not find frustrating time trials, impossible challenges, or micro-transactions here. Rain On Your Parade invites gamers to enjoy the ride at their own pace.
Gameplay
There was surprising depth to the gameplay as you continue to unlock the natural abilities all clouds should have. Rain is just the beginning. Lightning, snow and tornados open possibilities for a huge variety of genres to be tapped into. You will find yourself consuming a city in a black hole, mounting a tower defense against an onslaught of robots, or bringing the end of the dinosaurs through a barrage of fire and rock. There are hidden secrets throughout the game that are so unnecessary that it’s almost too good to be true. I recommend you continually check in at your home base. Not only to change the cosmetics of your cloud, but to play the arcade game that randomly appears in the corner of the room. Trust me, it’s worth it. The developers made a game they would love to play and it shows.
Writing
Throughout the game there are hilarious references to pop culture. Some beloved TV shows and video games make surprising cameos as you are thrown into their world of challenges. If you love The Office, South Park, or CS:GO, keep your eyes peeled. Aside from the scattered appearances of media loved by many, there is a somewhat coherent story. The loose semblance of story almost held the game back a little bit. There is a villain, but he is almost not worth mentioning. The game stood well on its own without the story aspect and could have done without it. I do not blame Unbound Creations for giving a direction or overarching objective but the villain that only appeared 3-4 times made us scratch our heads a bit.
Conclusions
This game is one I think a lot of people will enjoy. The developers wanted to capture the dark pleasure we humans get on ruining someone’s day without consequence and they facilitated that well. It’s accessible to both avid gamers and people who almost never touch a controller. The art design is crafty and minimal in great ways and the music slaps. Unfortunately at times the challenges were so simple they were almost just filler to hold you over until the next great level. About every other level felt this way, and it distracted from the truly special aspects of the game. We felt this game was impressive and are excited to see what is next from Unbound Creations.
